Arrecife simulates the behavior of a coral reef an ecosystem that functions as a natural barrier against waves

Great Advantages

Normally, manufacturers of wave energy converters (WEC) offer as an electric nominal power that related between 5 to 8 m waves.

Arrecife is designed to work with the most common waves from 1 to 5 high waves (98%), which means more efficiency both in the manufacturing and in the energy production, working at full capacity during more hours.

Arrecife is provided with cross-flow turbines that get activated by the waves, following the example of other successful systems such as hydraulic energy or wind energy that works with turbines too.

 

It is provided with an immersion system that will be operated in storms. The system submerges partially; hence, it avoids to be destroyed by them.

 

100% offshore. It can be adapted to any sort of mooring: single anchor, dead weight, chain, jackets or pilots among others.

 

It can be transported by a tugboat, which enables that revisions and reparations can be done in yards. Thus, O&M costs are reduced. Nevertheless, its design is ready for also being examined offshore as there are watertight areas for checking the systems.

 

It is adaptable to offshore wind farms, taking advantage of existing facilities. It enables the improvement of the profitability of those facilities.

 

Vertical positioning through controlled ballast. Similarly to an anchored boat, the system gets oriented through the waves’ direction.

 

Low fabrication cost, as it uses components and systems that are commercially extended.

 

The rotating system of turbines allows transforming the mentioned movement into electricity through electric generators.

the following conclusions

 

1. The system works offshore.

2. A simple anchor mooring worked correctly.

3. The system is oriented towards the waves automatically.

4. Turbines rotate also in survival mode.

5. The survival system avoided the impact of high waves.

FIRST SEA TEST

The test provided us

the following conclusions

 

1. The system works in real conditions.

2. A simple anchor mooring worked correctly.

3. The system is stable.

4. All the turbines rotate in a constant sense.

5. The waves break over the turbines, recovering partially its potential energy.

6. The system is strong robust. The mechanical resist H=1m real waves, being designed to 0,5m waves.

7. The survival system avoided the impact of high waves.

LAB TEST 

Carried out in IH Laboratory of the University of Cantabria at a 1:10th scale

The test provided us

the following conclusions

 

1. The system works and it generates energy.

2. All the turbines rotate in a constant sense.

3. The waves break over the turbines, recovering partially its potential energy.

4. The freewheels of every turbine took energy from the waves.

5. The data that was obtained match the ones obtained by René Champly.

6. The height of the wave was reduced, giving energy, after its passage through the energy converter.

7. The system is strong robust. The mechanical resist H=6m waves, being designed to 5m waves.

8. The mechanical solicitations of the waves over the whole device have been known.
